Receiving a kidney transplant six years ago in July 2018 marked a significant turning point in my life. Prior to the surgery, I struggled with Stage 5 kidney disease, with my kidney function plummeting to a mere 11%. The journey was arduous, with me facing life-threatening situations twice due to kidney failure. My health was severely compromised, and my daily routine was a constant battle against illness and limitations.
However, following the transplant, I experienced a dramatic transformation. Within 3.5 months post-surgery, I was able to return to work. Now equipped with renewed health and vitality, I found myself capable of pursuing activities I once deemed impossible, such as traveling and mountain climbing. The transplant not only restored my physical well-being but also infused my life with a newfound sense of freedom and possibility.
Even during the grueling period of undergoing dialysis for 3.5 years, I remained steadfast in my determination, continuing to work and refusing to let my circumstances define me. Surprisingly, rather than succumbing to despair, I found that my resilience was amplified by my experiences.
The transplant served as a catalyst for profound introspection, prompting me to reevaluate my priorities and outlook on life. It ignited a renewed sense of purpose and gratitude, magnifying my positivity and strengthening my faith. I also took proactive steps to give back to my community, initiating a college scholarship as a testament to my enduring optimism and desire to make a positive impact.
Before the transplant, I grappled with the daunting reality of being a single parent, compounded by financial concerns. Despite the initial relief following the successful surgery, I encountered a setback just one month later when I grappled with internal bleeding. However, thanks to the swift intervention of medical professionals, the issue was promptly addressed, allowing me to bounce back with remarkable speed.
Within a mere three months post-transplant, I defied the odds by returning to work. Not content with merely reclaiming my previous routine, I traveled to the Philippines just a year later — remarkably without any significant challenges. Throughout this tumultuous period, I remained motivated by an unwavering sense of purpose and a steadfast commitment to overcoming adversity.
My post-transplant journey has been deeply intertwined with my relationship with my donor, Chris Preciado, a figure who emerged as a beacon of hope and friendship. While Chris was not my biological donor, our connection was forged through a paired exchange program that facilitated my life-changing transplant.
Despite the disparity in our ages — Chris being 28 and me 51 — I embraced Chris as a surrogate son or nephew, and our relationship blossomed beyond the bounds of mere acquaintance. In the aftermath of the transplant, Chris spent two months with me in San Antonio, bridging geographical distances and cementing our newfound friendship.
Joel and Chris commemorate their "kidneyversary" each July, marking the anniversary of the life-saving transplant. Six years post-transplant, Joel reflects on the advancements in medical research, expressing optimism about emerging technologies such as bionic kidneys and advancements in stem cell research.
Never give up. My journey serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit — with steadfast determination, even the most daunting challenges can be surmounted.
Faith in a higher power. My belief in God or Infinite Intelligence serves as a source of solace and strength, imbuing me with the courage to face adversity head-on and trust in the greater purpose that guides my experience.
Nothing is impossible. Armed with this conviction, I refused to accept defeat, knowing deep within that a brighter future awaited on the other side of my tribulations.
Maintain a positive mindset. By cultivating mental, emotional, psychological, and physical well-being, I discovered an inner reservoir of resilience. A pivotal turning point came in 2015 during a near-death experience that imparted a profound sense of purpose and mission — a commitment to living each day to its fullest, embracing a lifestyle characterized by health, wealth, and happiness.
One such revelation emerged from the realization that the donor's kidney undergoes a remarkable transformation, growing 1.5 times in size to accommodate the recipient's body — a testament to the awe-inspiring resilience and adaptability of the human body.
Beyond the physiological marvels, I experienced a profound reframing of my attitude towards life, opting to trade expectation for appreciation. Embracing a minimalist lifestyle, I found solace in simplicity, shedding the burdens of excess and focusing on what truly matters. For me, every moment became infused with a sense of wonder and reverence, as I came to recognize the inherent beauty and miraculous nature of existence itself.
Since receiving my transplant, I've undergone significant lifestyle changes. I've adopted a holistic approach to wellness that encompasses diet, exercise, and stress management. I prioritize whole, nutrient-rich foods while minimizing processed options, and I've embraced a more active lifestyle — from brisk walking to hiking. I've also embarked on a journey of self-discovery and education, delving into bio-hacking and wellness optimization.
Central to my philosophy is the concept of "forever 25" — a mindset that transcends chronological age and embodies youthful vitality. Through practices such as meditation, prioritizing quality sleep, and managing stress, I nurture my mind, body, and spirit. I start each day with a sense of purpose and intention, embracing the dawn with enthusiasm and gratitude.
